Perhaps the most popular means of nutritional assistance in putting on muscle mass is the protein shake. This nutritional treat has helped countless bodybuilders put on more mass than any other supplement. Various other supplements come and go (such as glandulars, supposed plant steroids, etc.) but the protein shake has stood its ground. The protein shake is effective because it provides a dense amount of nutrition in a fairly small package. You don't have to eat tons of food to get the benefits of a lot of quality protein. Custom Tailored The protein shake can be put together in any fashion that you want. The protein shake provides a large amount of quality protein plus you can tailor the shake to taste just the way you like it. You can experiment with the shakes by adding or removing different ingredients depending on how you want the final concoction to turn out. The key is to keep the protein gram count high, and to keep the fat grams very low. If the range of protein that the body will assimilate at one time is only 30 to 50 grams, how do you get the high amount of protein necessary for new growth? The key is several small meals per day, as mentioned earlier. This may be difficult for some people and that is where the protein drink fits in so well. You can add extra protein and calories easily. If you really struggle with adding body size, the protein drink is still the key. You simply drink more of them. If you are a "hardgainer" (the term used for those who have an especially hard time gaining muscle mass), increase the number of protein drinks per day. If the nonhardgainer takes one protein drink a day, the hardgainer should take at least two. If you find that you are having a super-hard time gaining muscle mass, increase your protein shakes to three a day, with one shortly before bedtime. Simply keep taking protein drinks until you shatter the resistance that your metabolism is putting up. You may even have to get up a little earlier in the day to get in an extra protein drink if you are a hardgainer, however, most will find that one or two protein drinks per day will do the trick. Make use of the powerful effects of the protein drink to aid in putting on massive size. Custom-tailor the ingredients to fit your taste, as long as you follow the recipe guidelines, including only items that are high in protein and very low in fat. Most of the creative tailoring can be done in the area of flavoring. There is no rule that says a protein drink has to taste terrible so make yours as delicious as you want it to be. |
