There is one nutrient that stands out when it comes to putting on muscular body mass - protein. Protein is king in the bodybuilder's diet. Protein is the centerpiece of the diet for anyone seriously interested in making the muscles grow. Without adequate protein intake you cannot hope to grow. You could lift tons of weights and nothing much would happen to your body unless you were getting an adequate intake of protein.

The very name of protein gives an indicator of its nutritional importance. The word protein in French is spelled proteine, which means "primary substance to the body." This rendition of the word was derived from the late Greek word proteios which means "primary." That word came from an earlier word, protos which means "first." Any way you slice it, protein is of primary importance to the human body. Every person needs protein. The person who is putting on muscle mass needs it even more!
